A small arrow pointing down

This formulation, Amantadine HCl 100 mg/ml Oral Liquid (Gluten Free), is a specially designed liquid medication intended for oral administration. It provides a convenient and easily ingested dosage form for accurate delivery of medication. This formulation is often used when swallowing solid dosage forms is challenging, such as in pediatric and geriatric populations, or for individuals with dysphagia.

Amantadine HCl is an antiviral medication that is primarily used to prevent or treat certain influenza infections. It works by blocking the actions of viruses in your body. In addition to its antiviral properties, Amantadine HCl is also used to treat Parkinson's disease and "Parkinson-like" symptoms such as stiffness and shaking that may be caused by the use of certain drugs. It works by restoring the balance of natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

Being in a liquid form, this formulation allows for precise dosing adjustments, which is particularly beneficial for patients who require individualized dosing regimens. The gluten-free aspect of this formulation makes it suitable for patients with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, ensuring that they can take this medication without any adverse reactions related to gluten.

It is important to note that this medication should be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider, and it is crucial to follow the prescribed dosage to ensure its effectiveness and to minimize potential side effects. Side effects may include dizziness, lightheadedness, or trouble sleeping. If these effects persist or worsen, patients should promptly inform their doctor or pharmacist.

For prescribers, it is essential to consider the patient's overall health status, other medications being taken, and the patient's specific disease state when prescribing this formulation. Regular monitoring and follow-up are necessary to assess the patient's response to the medication and to make any necessary dosage adjustments.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

Amantadine HCl is an antiviral medication that is also used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and certain movement disorders caused by certain psychiatric drugs. It works by blocking the actions of viruses in your body, and it also affects certain chemicals in the nervous system that may help improve movement disorders.

Amantadine HCl may interact with several other medications, which can affect how it works or increase the risk of serious side effects. It is important to keep a list of all the products you use (including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist.

Some products that may interact with Amantadine HCl include anticholinergic drugs (such as scopolamine, certain antihistamines like diphenhydramine), certain drugs used for bladder control (such as oxybutynin, tolterodine), other drugs that can cause drowsiness (including alcohol, marijuana, drugs for sleep or anxiety such as alprazolam, zolpidem, muscle relaxants, and narcotic pain relievers such as codeine).

Amantadine HCl can also interact with certain medications for mental/mood conditions (such as antipsychotics, antidepressants), certain medications for high blood pressure (such as beta blockers like metoprolol, calcium channel blockers like diltiazem), and certain medications for stomach/intestinal diseases (such as drugs for acid reflux, ulcers).

Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor's approval. If you are taking other drugs that cause drowsiness such as opioid pain or cough relievers (such as codeine, hydrocodone), alcohol, marijuana, drugs for sleep or anxiety (such as alprazolam, lorazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants (such as carisoprodol, cyclobenzaprine), or antihistamines (such as cetirizine, diphenhydramine), the risk of drowsiness may be increased.

It is also important to note that Amantadine HCl can cause a condition that affects the heart rhythm (QT prolongation). QT prolongation can rarely cause serious (rarely fatal) fast/irregular heartbeat and other symptoms (such as severe dizziness, fainting) that need medical attention right away.

The risk of QT prolongation may be increased if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other drugs that may cause QT prolongation. Before using Amantadine HCl, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the drugs you take and if you have any of the following conditions: certain heart problems (heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG), family history of certain heart problems (QT prolongation in the EKG, sudden cardiac death).

Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also increase your risk of QT prolongation. This risk may increase if you use certain drugs (such as diuretics/"water pills") or if you have conditions such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Talk to your doctor about using Amantadine HCl safely.

This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Therefore, before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products you use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share the list with your doctor and pharmacist.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Amantadine HCl 100 mg/ml Oral Liquid (Gluten Free) is a specially formulated medication that works by influencing the actions of certain chemicals in the body, particularly a substance called dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, a chemical that nerves use to communicate with one another. Amantadine has antiviral and antiparkinsonian properties, meaning it can be used to treat both viral infections and symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

When used as an antiviral, Amantadine inhibits the replication of certain viruses, specifically the Influenza A virus. It does this by blocking the action of a viral protein, preventing the virus from releasing its genetic material into the host cell. This stops the virus from multiplying and spreading, helping to control the infection.

As an antiparkinsonian agent, Amantadine works by increasing the amount of dopamine in the brain. Parkinson's disease is associated with low levels of dopamine, and by increasing these levels, Amantadine can help reduce the symptoms of the disease, such as stiffness, shaking, and difficulty with movement.

The oral liquid formulation of Amantadine HCl is particularly beneficial for patients who have difficulty swallowing solid dosage forms, such as tablets or capsules. This can include children, the elderly, or individuals with certain medical conditions. The liquid formulation allows for accurate dosing and is easy to ingest, making it a convenient option for these patients.

It's important to note that while Amantadine can help manage symptoms of Parkinson's disease and control Influenza A virus infections, it is not a cure for either condition. It should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

Other Uses

A small arrow pointing down

Amantadine HCl is a medication known primarily for its antiviral and antiparkinsonian effects. However, it also has other potential applications that could benefit certain patient populations. Amantadine HCl in this specific liquid formulation may be particularly well-suited to off-label uses where other medication forms can be challenging due to dysphagia or palatability issues.

Aside from its primary uses, amantadine can be considered as a treatment option for fatigue in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). It has been found to have a significant positive effect on both fatigue severity and impact on daily life. This medication may prove beneficial to the quality of life for MS patients struggling with chronic exhaustion. It's also used in certain rare neurological movement disorders such as Chorea caused by Huntington's disease or side effects of certain medications.

It's also worth noting that amantadine has been utilized in the treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Research shows it can promote arousal and cognitive recovery during the early weeks and months of recovery from TBI. Amantadine appears to expedite motor and cognitive recovery and may be particularly effective in patients with more severe injuries.

So whether it's managing viral diseases, Parkinson's disease, MS-related fatigue, certain movement disorders, or aiding recovery from TBI, Amantadine HCl can offer an important clinical solution. It's important to remember that the benefits should always be weighed against potential side effects, including but not limited to gastrointestinal disturbances, orthostatic hypotension, and neuropsychiatric conditions. The utility of this medication should be tailored to the individual patient's needs and continuously reassessed to ensure it continues to provide therapeutic benefit.

Physicians prescribing amantadine off-label should be mindful of its extensive renal elimination and adjust doses accordingly in those with renal impairment. Closer monitoring may be needed for the elderly patients or those with preexisting cardiac disease due to risk of QTc prolongation. Therefore, while beneficial, consultation with an experienced compounding pharmacist is always beneficial to optimize therapeutic effectiveness and minimize risks.
