Chlorpheniramine Maleate may interact with other medications, which can affect how it works or increase the risk of serious side effects. It is important to keep a list of all the products you use (including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. Chlorpheniramine is very similar to dexchlorpheniramine. Do not use medications containing dexchlorpheniramine while using chlorpheniramine. This document does not contain all possible interactions. Therefore, before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products you use.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Chlorpheniramine Maleate 0.4 mg/ml Oral Liquid is an antihistamine medication that works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. By blocking the action of histamine, Chlorpheniramine Maleate helps to relieve these symptoms.

This medication is specifically formulated as an oral liquid, which makes it easier to ingest, especially for patients who have difficulty swallowing solid dosage forms. The liquid formulation allows for accurate dosing and is often preferred for pediatric and geriatric populations. The medication is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and begins to work within 30 minutes to an hour after administration.

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is used to treat a variety of disease states associated with allergic reactions, including seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis due to inhalant allergens and foods, mild, uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations of urticaria and angioedema, amelioration of allergic reactions to blood or plasma, and as therapy for anaphylactic reactions adjunctive to epinephrine and other standard measures after the acute manifestations have been controlled.

It's important to note that while Chlorpheniramine Maleate can help manage symptoms of these conditions, it does not cure them. It is also not intended to be used as a substitute for avoiding known allergens or for the treatment of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).

As with any medication, it's important to use Chlorpheniramine Maleate as directed by a healthcare provider. Overuse or misuse can lead to unwanted side effects, including drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth/nose/throat, constipation, or trouble urinating. If these effects persist or worsen, or if you have any other concerns, please reach out to us or your healthcare provider.

Remember, we are here to help. If you have any questions about Chlorpheniramine Maleate 0.4 mg/ml Oral Liquid or any other medication, don't hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. Other Uses

A small arrow pointing down

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine primarily used to provide relief from symptoms of allergies, such as itching, runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes. However, it also has other uses. Outside its primary application, Chlorpheniramine Maleate may be utilized off-label to manage common cold symptoms or other upper respiratory conditions not caused by allergies. This is due to its ability to help reduce the effects of the histamine in the body, which can cause symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes and a runny nose.

While less common, doctors may also prescribe this medication for its sedative properties. Antihistamines like Chlorpheniramine Maleate can induce drowsiness and are sometimes used to assist with sleep in individuals who might be experiencing insomnia. It's important to note however, that patients should never use this medication solely for inducing sleep without the guidance of a physician, because it can foster dependence and lead to health complications.

Furthermore, it may also be adjunctively used for managing symptoms in certain dermatological conditions like pruritus and urticaria, where a reduction of histamine action can help alleviate discomfort. However, patients should always discuss the potential benefits against the risks with their prescriber before initiating therapy for an off-label use.

Due to the possibility of side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, or constipation, as well as interactions with other medications or medical conditions, it is imperative that all uses, standard or off-label, are conducted under the guidance of a healthcare professional. This is particularly important for special populations such as children, elderly or individuals with chronic health conditions.

We also recommend that you talk to your pharmacist or healthcare provider for more details. As dedicated compounding pharmacists at Bayview Pharmacy, we are equipped to answer your questions and ensure that this medication is prepared in a way that is safe and best suited for your unique needs.
