Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

This formulation consists of Calcium Carbonate 1000 mg and Magnesium Oxide 500 mg, encapsulated in either gelatin or vegetarian shells. These solid dosage forms are designed for easy swallowing and precise dosage delivery. The active ingredients, Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Oxide, are essential minerals that play a crucial role in various bodily functions.

Calcium Carbonate is primarily used to prevent or treat conditions caused by low calcium levels such as bone loss (osteoporosis), weak bones (osteomalacia/rickets), decreased activity of the parathyroid gland (hypoparathyroidism), and a certain muscle disease (latent tetany). It may also be used in certain patients to make sure they are getting enough calcium (e.g., women who are pregnant, nursing, or postmenopausal, people taking certain medications such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, or prednisone).

Magnesium Oxide is used to treat or prevent low levels of magnesium in the blood. Magnesium is very important for the normal functioning of cells, nerves, muscles, bones, and the heart. Usually, a well-balanced diet provides normal blood levels of magnesium. However, certain situations cause your body to lose magnesium faster than you can replace it from your diet. These situations include treatment with "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), a poor diet, alcoholism, or other medical conditions (e.g., severe diarrhea/vomiting, stomach/intestinal absorption problems, poorly controlled diabetes).

It's important to note that these capsules should be taken as directed by your healthcare provider, usually with food to increase absorption. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day.

Side effects may include constipation, bloating, or upset stomach. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. If your doctor has directed you to use this medication, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Oxide are both essential minerals that are used to prevent or treat low amounts of calcium or magnesium in the blood. Calcium is necessary for many normal functions of the body, especially bone formation and maintenance. Magnesium is important for the normal functioning of cells, nerves, muscles, bones, and the heart.

However, like all medications, Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Oxide can interact with other drugs. It is important to be aware of these potential interactions to ensure the safe and effective use of this medication.

Calcium Carbonate can interact with bisphosphonates (such as alendronate), tetracycline antibiotics (such as doxycycline, minocycline), quinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin), and thyroid medicine (such as levothyroxine). These interactions can decrease the absorption and effectiveness of these medications. To prevent this interaction, doses of these medications and calcium should be spaced by at least 2 to 4 hours.

Magnesium Oxide can interact with certain medications such as quinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin), tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline, minocycline), and bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate). Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with these drugs, leading to decreased absorption of both magnesium and the other drug. To prevent this interaction, doses of these medications and magnesium should be spaced by at least 2 to 3 hours.

Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Oxide can also interact with certain heart medications, diuretics, and medications used to treat gastric acid-related disorders. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, prescription medications, and dietary supplements.

It is also important to note that high doses of Calcium and Magnesium can affect the absorption of other minerals in the body such as iron, zinc, and phosphate. Therefore, it is recommended to take this medication as directed by your healthcare provider.

While this medication is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects such as constipation, bloating, or gas. If these side effects persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

If you have any questions about the potential drug interactions or the use of Calcium Carbonate 1000 mg/Magnesium Oxide 500 mg Oral Capsules, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to ensure that you receive the most benefit from your medication.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

The Calcium Carbonate 1000 mg/Magnesium Oxide 500 mg Oral Capsules are a solid dosage form that consists of two gelatin or vegetarian shells enclosing the medication. This design allows for easy swallowing and ensures a precise dosage of the active ingredients, calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide.

Calcium carbonate is a dietary supplement used when the amount of calcium taken in the diet is not enough. Calcium is needed by the body for healthy bones, muscles, nervous system, and heart. It plays a crucial role in blood clotting, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and cell membrane function. When there is a deficiency of calcium in the diet, the body will take calcium from bones, thereby weakening them. Hence, taking calcium supplements helps to prevent bone loss.

Magnesium oxide is used as a supplement to maintain adequate magnesium in the body. Magnesium is a mineral that is important for normal bone structure and is essential for many cellular functions such as energy production, protein synthesis, and cell replication. It also plays a vital role in nerve function, muscle contraction, and maintaining a normal heart rhythm.

Together, these two ingredients work to supplement the body's calcium and magnesium levels, ensuring the proper functioning of the body's systems and maintaining bone health. This formulation is particularly beneficial for individuals who may be at risk of calcium and magnesium deficiency, such as those with certain malabsorption syndromes, individuals on long-term corticosteroid treatment, postmenopausal women, and individuals following a vegan diet.

It's important to note that while these capsules can help maintain adequate levels of calcium and magnesium in the body, they are not intended to treat specific disease states. They are a supplement and should be used as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

These oral capsules, which contain Calcium Carbonate 1000 mg and Magnesium Oxide 500 mg, are commonly known for their use in treating certain disease states. In addition to their established therapeutic uses, this specific formulation may also be beneficial in several other ways. While the calcium carbonate primarily serves in treating conditions like osteoporosis and hypocalcemia and acts as an antacid, it also has proven benefits in dental health. Regular intake of calcium-based supplements can aid in maintaining optimal oral health by strengthening jaw bones and preventing periodontal diseases.

Furthermore, calcium also has a prominent role when it comes to muscle function and neurotransmission, thereby supporting optimal heart functioning and assisting in normal blood clotting. Magnesium Oxide in the formulation is not only well recognized for treating low magnesium levels and reflux diseases but also has other significant roles. It may benefit the individuals experiencing regular migraines or insomnia as it aids in neurological function and might help to maintain a regular sleep pattern.

The combination of Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Oxide in this formulation might also support women's health by reducing the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The blend of these minerals may assist in reducing bloating, mood swings, and other PMS symptoms. It's important to note that while the medication can be taken by most people, the dosage may need to be adjusted or monitored for individuals with certain conditions such as kidney disease, heart disease, or gastrointestinal disorders.
