Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

Caffeine 100 mg Oral Capsules are a solid dosage form that consists of two gelatin or vegetarian shells enclosing the active ingredient, caffeine. This formulation is designed to provide a precise dosage of 100 mg of caffeine, ensuring accurate and consistent dosing. The encapsulated form allows for convenient and easy swallowing, making it a preferred choice for patients who may have difficulty with other dosage forms.

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that is commonly used to increase alertness and reduce fatigue. It works by blocking the action of adenosine, a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep and relaxation. By doing so, caffeine helps to increase alertness and improve concentration. This makes it a useful treatment for conditions such as narcolepsy and other sleep disorders. It can also be used to treat or prevent certain types of headaches, and to enhance the effect of some pain relievers.

While caffeine is generally safe for most people when used appropriately, it can cause side effects such as nervousness, restlessness, and trouble sleeping. It can also interact with certain medications, so it's important for patients to inform their healthcare provider of all the medications they are currently taking. Patients with certain health conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or liver disease, should use caffeine with caution.

As compounding pharmacists, we can customize the dosage and form of caffeine to meet the specific needs of each patient. We can also provide advice on how to use this medication safely and effectively. If you have any questions about Caffeine 100 mg Oral Capsules or any other medication, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. We are here to help.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

Caffeine 100 mg Oral Capsules are a common stimulant used to increase alertness, decrease fatigue, and improve concentration. However, like all medications, caffeine can interact with other drugs, potentially altering their effects or causing adverse reactions. It's important for both patients and prescribers to be aware of these potential interactions.

Firstly, caffeine can interact with certain types of antidepressants, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). This combination can lead to dangerously high blood pressure, a condition known as hypertensive crisis. If you're taking an MAOI, it's crucial to limit your caffeine intake.

Secondly, caffeine can interact with certain antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin, which can block the breakdown of caffeine in the body. This can increase the effects of caffeine and lead to jitteriness, headache, increased heart rate, or other side effects.

Thirdly, caffeine can decrease the effectiveness of certain drugs used to treat epilepsy or certain types of heart conditions. These include drugs like phenytoin and dipyridamole. If you're taking these medications, it's important to discuss your caffeine intake with your doctor.

Lastly, combining caffeine with other stimulants, such as pseudoephedrine, can increase the risk of overstimulation, leading to increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and potentially, a heart attack. Always check the labels of over-the-counter cold and flu medications to see if they contain caffeine or other stimulants.

It's important to note that everyone's body reacts differently to medications, and these are not all the possible drug interactions. Always consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist before starting any new medication, including over-the-counter drugs, and discuss your current medication regimen, including your caffeine intake.

Remember, the team at Bayview Pharmacy is always here to help. If you have any questions about caffeine interactions or any other medication concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to us. Your health and safety are our top priority.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Caffeine 100 mg Oral Capsules are a solid dosage form that consists of two shells, either gelatin or vegetarian, which enclose the medication. This design allows for easy swallowing and ensures a precise dosage of the active ingredients. The primary active ingredient in this formulation is caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant.

Caffeine works by stimulating the central nervous system, heart, muscles, and the centers that control blood pressure. It is a naturally occurring substance found in a variety of plants, where it acts as a pesticide. In humans, caffeine acts as a stimulant, warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness. It achieves this by blocking the receptors for adenosine, a neurotransmitter that relaxes the brain and makes you feel tired. Normally, the levels of adenosine in the brain increase over the day, making you increasingly tired and less alert. By blocking these receptors, caffeine prevents this action of adenosine, thereby reducing tiredness and increasing alertness.

These capsules can be used to treat or manage several disease states. They can be used to restore mental alertness or wakefulness during fatigue or drowsiness. They are also used off-label to treat headaches, migraines, and to enhance the effect of some pain relievers. In some cases, caffeine is used to treat apnea (temporary cessation of breathing) in premature infants.

It's important to note that while caffeine can help reduce feelings of fatigue or drowsiness, it is not a substitute for sleep. Long-term use of caffeine can lead to a physical dependence, and withdrawal symptoms can occur if you suddenly stop consuming it. It's also possible to consume too much caffeine, leading to side effects such as restlessness, insomnia, and rapid heartbeat.

As with any medication, it's important to use caffeine responsibly and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. If you have any questions about this formulation, or if you're considering using it to treat a specific condition, please reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. We're here to help.

Compounded preparations have no NDC, so this formula will not appear in your EHR's drug search. Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. If your EHR forces you to pick a listed drug, pick the closest entry for the active ingredient and put the full formula in the prescription body (the Sig or directions field), not in Notes to Pharmacy.

Compounded preparations have no NDC and will not appear in your drug search. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body.
