Metronidazole is a versatile antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent widely used in compounded formulations for its efficacy in treating a variety of infections.
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial used to treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa.[1][2] It diffuses into susceptible organisms and interacts with their DNA, causing strand breakage and cell death.[1]
In clinical practice, metronidazole is used for conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, amebiasis, and Clostridioides difficile infection, and topical formulations are used to treat rosacea.[1] Bayview compounds metronidazole preparations on a prescriber's order.
Prescribers should be aware of potential side effects, which may include nausea, headache, an unpleasant metallic taste, and, less commonly, neurological effects such as peripheral neuropathy, seizures, or problems with coordination.[1][2] Patients should avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours afterward because of disulfiram-like reactions, and patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment should be watched closely for neurologic symptoms.[1]
