Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) is a versatile and highly effective active pharmaceutical ingredient widely used in compounded formulations for its unique properties.
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a solvent used as an ingredient in compounded preparations. It readily penetrates and diffuses through biological membranes, and it has been studied as a vehicle for carrying other drugs through the skin in topical applications.[1]
At low concentrations, DMSO exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, vasodilator, and muscle-relaxing properties, among others.[1] DMSO is also a scavenger of hydroxyl free radicals.[1] Its FDA-approved uses are limited to the treatment of interstitial cystitis and use as a preservative for organ transplant; other uses, including dermatologic uses, are off-label.[1] The FDA-approved product, RIMSO-50, is a bladder instillation indicated for symptomatic relief of interstitial cystitis.[2]
