Betamethasone Dipropionate is a potent topical corticosteroid used in dermatology for its anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties.[1] Topical corticosteroids also cause vasoconstriction in the upper dermis, which reduces the delivery of inflammatory mediators.[2] Betamethasone Dipropionate is used for corticosteroid-responsive skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and atopic dermatitis, where inflammation and itching are prominent symptoms.[1][2]
As a synthetic glucocorticoid, Betamethasone Dipropionate works by modulating the body's immune response: corticosteroids increase the expression of anti-inflammatory genes, inhibit inflammatory transcription factors, and suppress immune cell maturation and proliferation.[2] FDA-approved betamethasone dipropionate ointment is indicated for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses in patients 13 years of age or older.[1]
