Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

This formulation is a combination of four active ingredients: Bupropion HCl 50 mg, Liothyronine 5 mcg, Phentermine HCl 15 mg, and Spironolactone 12.5 mg. Each of these ingredients plays a unique role in treating various disease states. The medication is encapsulated in a solid dosage form, either gelatin or vegetarian, which allows for easy swallowing and precise dosage administration.

Bupropion HCl is an antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. It works by affecting certain chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with depression. Liothyronine is a thyroid hormone that is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It helps to regulate the body's energy and metabolism.

Phentermine HCl is a stimulant similar to an amphetamine. It is an appetite suppressant that affects the central nervous system and is used together with diet and exercise to treat obesity. Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt and keeps your potassium levels from getting too low. It is used to diagnose or treat a condition in which you have too much aldosterone in your body. Aldosterone is a hormone produced by your adrenal glands to help regulate the salt and water balance in your body.

This combination of medications can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression, hypothyroidism, obesity, and conditions related to an imbalance of aldosterone. It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not adjust your dose without consulting your healthcare provider. This medication should be used in conjunction with appropriate lifestyle modifications such as a healthy diet and regular exercise.

As with any medication, there may be potential side effects. These can include dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability, nausea, and vomiting. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Remember, it is important to keep all medication out of reach and sight of children as many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and young children can open them easily. To protect young children from poisoning, always lock safety caps and immediately place the medication in a safe location – one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

This formulation combines Bupropion HCl, Liothyronine, Phentermine HCl, and Spironolactone in a single oral capsule. Each of these active ingredients has a specific role in treating various disease states. Bupropion HCl is an antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. Liothyronine is a thyroid hormone used to treat hypothyroidism. Phentermine HCl is a stimulant similar to an amphetamine, used as an appetite suppressant in weight loss treatment. Spironolactone is a diuretic and is used to treat fluid retention (edema) in patients with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or a kidney disorder called nephrotic syndrome. It is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

It's important to note that these medications can interact with other drugs. Bupropion may interact with other antidepressants, antipsychotics, beta-blockers, corticosteroids, and antihistamines. It can also interact with drugs that lower seizure threshold, such as tramadol, theophylline, and systemic steroids. Liothyronine may interact with anticoagulants, digitalis glycosides, ketamine, insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents, and tricyclic antidepressants. Phentermine may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, and other central nervous system stimulants. Spironolactone may interact with ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor antagonists, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and potassium supplements.

Patients should inform their healthcare provider about all the medications they are currently taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. This is to ensure that any potential drug interactions can be managed appropriately. It's also important to follow the prescribed dosage and administration instructions to ensure the effectiveness of the medication and to minimize the risk of adverse effects.

Patients should monitor their health while taking this medication and report any unusual symptoms to their healthcare provider. These may include changes in mood or behavior, unusual weight loss or gain, changes in appetite, increased thirst or urination, muscle weakness or cramps, irregular heartbeat, or swelling in the legs or ankles.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

This formulation is a combination of four active ingredients: Bupropion HCl, Liothyronine, Phentermine HCl, and Spironolactone. Each of these ingredients works in a unique way to treat various disease states.

Bupropion HCl is an antidepressant that works by affecting certain chemicals within the brain that nerves use to send messages to each other. These chemical messengers, called neurotransmitters, are released by nerves and then travel and attach to nearby nerves. Thus, neurotransmission can be thought of as the communication system of the brain. Many experts believe that depression is caused by an imbalance among the amounts of neurotransmitters that are released. Bupropion is thought to increase the activity of neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine, thereby reducing symptoms of depression.

Liothyronine is a man-made form of a hormone that is normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body's energy and metabolism. It is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own. Liothyronine works by replacing or providing more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery.

Phentermine HCl is a sympathomimetic amine with pharmacologic activity similar to the prototype drugs of this class used in obesity, amphetamine (d- and d/l-amphetamine). Drugs of this class used in obesity are commonly known as “anorectics” or “anorexigenics.” It has not been established, however, that the action of such drugs in treating obesity is primarily one of appetite suppression. Other central nervous system actions or metabolic effects may be involved, for example.

Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt and keeps your potassium levels from getting too low. Spironolactone is used to diagnose or treat a condition in which you have too much aldosterone in your body. Aldosterone is a hormone produced by your adrenal glands to help regulate the salt and water balance in your body.

This formulation is enclosed in a solid dosage form composed of two gelatin or vegetarian shells. This allows for convenient and easy swallowing, and provides a precise dosage of the active ingredients. The capsule form also allows for a slow release of the medication, ensuring a steady absorption into the bloodstream.

Other Uses

A small arrow pointing down

This multi-ingredient capsule formulation can serve a range of therapeutic purposes apart from those stated. Each of the constituents, Bupropion HCl (50 mg), Liothyronine (5 mcg), Phentermine HCl (15 mg), and Spironolactone (12.5 mg), exhibits unique pharmacological actions that can be utilized in other clinical scenarios.

Bupropion HCl, primarily recognized for its role in the management of depression and prevention of seasonal affective disorder, may potentially aid tobacco-smoking cessation. It is known to decrease cravings and nicotine withdrawal effects, making it useful for those attempting to stop smoking.

Liothyronine serves to substitute or supplement natural thyroid hormone in the body, and its uses extend past thyroid hormone replacement therapy. It can be employed to diagnose hypothyroidism by carrying out a thyroid suppression test. Moreover, in rare cases, physicians may consider its use in obese individuals to speed up metabolic processes to promote weight loss, though this use is generally not recommended due to potential adverse effects.

Phentermine HCl is used outside the scope of short-term (a few weeks) management of exogenous obesity. Off-label use includes its incorporation into weight-loss regimens for patients who have not responded adequately to diet and exercise alone. Please note that this use should be under strict medical supervision due to potential side effects and dependency issues associated with phentermine.

Spironolactone, a mainstay for hypertension and heart failure treatment, can also be used to manage ascites in patients with liver disease, primary hyperaldosteronism, and for patients dealing with hirsutism in polycystic ovary syndrome. Additionally, it can be used off-label for reducing troublesome symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) given its anti-androgenic properties.

Given the different nature of these drug constituents, the formulation can have wide applications, but these additional uses should be guided by a healthcare provider. The off-label uses should be considered carefully due to the associated risks and benefits and possible interaction between active ingredients. If you are a healthcare provider or patient and want to learn more about the potential applications of this formulation, don't hesitate to reach out to us.
